The brief for this project was to create a three-page feature supplement for a hypothetical edition of GQ Magazine's Taste & Travel. This included a front cover, as well as a double page spread with a main cover story and multiple breakout sections. All copy, headings and photos content were supplied with strict instructions to not make any modifications, but all decisions as to its visual language and design, as well as all vector graphics, were mine to make. This task was a true test of attention to detail, alongside balancing significant amounts of text with large-scale images all while staying true to a consistent brand guideline.
I decided to begin by reimagining the brand identity for Taste & Travel, and use this as a starting point to build the layout. The Taste & Travel logo is a wordmark that utilises a stepped design to create a point of difference between the words "Taste" and "Travel" to signify the two categories of content that this magazine writes about, separated from a uniquely-designed ampersand (&). The Ampersand is the core brand mark of this magazine, designed to instantly distinguish Taste & Travel from its competition, as well as from GQ Magazine itself. When viewers see content from Taste & Travel, they will instantly know they're reading the feature supplement magazine. The identity itself is clean and sharp, with a consistent look and soon-to-be iconic "broken" border style to accentuate particular breakout sections. The magazine's layout is strongly influenced by the brand identity, making use of the brand's core earthy-style colours of brown, green, black and white.
